General Information

Hip arthritis can present challenges when trying to do your normal activities, including sex.  Pain, stiffness, fatigue, anxiety, and positioning difficulties can get in the way. Your back or knees can also hurt because of the arthritis in your hip, making matters even worse.

If you’re a woman with hip arthritis, you might have even more problems with sex after a hip replacement than a man. This is because of difficulty with certain sexual positions when your hips are stiff and painful.

Your partner might shy away from sex because they’re afraid of hurting you. If you’re taking narcotic pain medicine, you might be more comfortable during sex.  However, drowsiness and other side effects of the drugs might interfere with intimacy.

Once total hip replacement is chosen as a treatment option, many individuals look forward to the resumption of sexual relations without pain or anxiety.
